From January to March 2026, 1,378 young people aged 11–18 across Suffolk took part in a countywide survey about climate change, the environment, and their hopes for a greener future.

Importantly, responses came from a wide cross‑section of students: not just eco‑committees, climate clubs or those already engaged in environmental work.

What they told us:

  • 97% said they care about protecting the environment.
  • Almost 90% believe that young people can make a difference.
  • Nearly 70% had not heard of green careers

Students shared which environmental issues matter most to them, from biodiversity loss and climate change to plastic pollution, and the actions they are already taking such as recycling, reusing, saving energy and choosing more sustainable travel. Their responses also revealed the barriers that stop them doing more, such as cost, lack of knowledge, or feeling unsure whether individual actions make a difference.

Survey results

The findings will now directly inform future work across the county. They will help:

  • The Suffolk Sustainable Schools Team plan new projects, resources and support for schools
  • The Suffolk Climate Emergency Plan Education Subgroup shape countywide actions, with a focus on green careers

This feedback gives us a clear picture of what young people need next: more opportunities to learn about sustainability in school, better access to green career pathways, and hearing directly from young people working in these fields.

We are very grateful to every school that encouraged their students to take part. Special thanks go to the three schools with the highest number of responses:

  • King Edward VI School – 554 responses
  • Kesgrave High School – 277 responses
  • Hadleigh High School – 228 responses

Every student who completed the survey was entered into a prize draw to win £200 for a sustainability project at their school, and we’re delighted to announce that Kesgrave High School was the winner! The funding will support a student‑led sustainability initiative chosen by the school.
