Suffolk Sustainable Schools Network is a collaborative initiative dedicated to supporting educational settings across the county in becoming environmentally responsible and future-focused. We work with schools, local authorities, and community partners to embed sustainability into everyday learning, operations, and culture.
Purpose and Goals
Suffolk Public Sector Organisations recognise the crucial role that schools can play in achieving decarbonisation and nature recovery across the county. SUSSN was created to support meaningful climate action and embed sustainability into every aspect of school life. The aims of the network align with the Department of Education’s Sustainability & Climate Change Strategy and therefore we support schools to plan and deliver their climate action plans (link to DfE page on the website).
Who can join?
Given the diversity of interests that sit within the broad topic of sustainability, we have designed the network to be inclusive of all school staff whether they are senior leaders, teachers, site managers or support staff. If you are interested in promoting sustainable practice and supporting a greener future for Suffolk’s young people – then this network is for you!
What the network offers
School climate action plans are broad in scope and often involve many stakeholders from the school community. Therefore, SUSSN offers a range of opportunities for school staff to best support climate and nature action. These include:
- Signposting
- Network Meetings
- Newsletters
- Events
- Free training
- Funded projects
Why the network matters
SUSSN seeks to support schools in writing and delivering their climate action plans. These documents, if designed and delivered inclusively with key stakeholders across the school community, can embed sustainability into all aspects of school operations and prepare young people for a world impacted by climate change and biodiversity loss. Involving both staff and learners in climate action planning can foster enthusiasm for positive change, increases their knowledge, and give them a sense of agency in addressing climate and nature concerns.
